Nehru was born in Allahabad, India in 1889. His father was a well-known lawyer and a prominent advisor to Mahatma Gandhi. Nehru taught a number of English teachers and tutors at home until he was sixteen. He continued his education in England, first at Harrow School and then at Trinity College Cambridge,

where he received honorary awards in science. He later studied law at the Inner Temple in London and then returned to India in 1912 to practice law for several years. Four years later, Nehru married Kamala Kaul. Their only child, Indira Pryadarshini, was born in 1917. Indira later served as Prime Minister of India like her father under her married name: Indira Gandhi.

A family of successful people, one of Nehru's sisters, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, later became the first woman to preside over the UN General Assembly.
